As I sit here, chugging my morning coffee, I am mentally reviewing my year of 2022. Bringing in the New Year is one of my favorite times of the year. I love new chapters, and setting new goals.
However, before I leave 2022 behind, I am reflecting on the “Don’t Look Away” video by Derek Woods Band. Working behind the scenes on this particular video was a positive and beneficial career opportunity. I valued this opportunity because I am a non-traditional student at the University of Pittsburgh. Having educational experiences, such as “work-hours” outside of the classroom, enhances my skill and education. I am in my final year of my undergrad. Majoring in Humanities. My degree focuses on Theatre, Studio Arts, and Music.
Jamie Wright, Video Director/Cinematographer/Editor contacted me, and asked “if I would like to take behind the scene photo’s of Derek Woods Band Don’t Look Away video”. My response: “Absolutely!” I made sure to take notes on what kind of photos Jamie was looking for.
Key Learning Points:
- Proper Time Management
- Paying attention to detail
- The importance of organization
- How to work in different weather/lighting situations
- Rules to follow when filming
- What scenes would need to be re-filmed
- The importance of location and lighting
During filming, I had the opportunity to work with Sean Glass, and Dave Clinton. Sean and Dave were the ones that brought the Muppet to life. We would have brief conversations on how they studied Derek’s movements. I found this interesting because they had to do their own research before coming on-set.
When working with the Muppet:
- How to adjust the Muppet.
- How to properly maneuver the Muppet.
- What equipment was needed for each scene.
- What accessories did the Muppet need?
- How many people were going to be needed to move the Muppet for a specific scene.
These were all examples of things that needed to be taken into consideration to help create this video.
A surprise awaited for me… Jamie asked me “if I would like to make a cameo in the video?” Of course I do! so not only was I experiencing all these cool things behind the scenes, but I now get to be in the video!! This gave me an opportunity to zero in on my acting…. For this particular video, my character needed to have a bubbly, animated, energetic, and cute personality. This needed to be clearly visible.

In conclusion, this was a great highlight to my 2022! I worked with great people and I learned a lot. Thank you for the opportunity and experience.
