Let’s Talk Crystals

By: Heather Knisely

1. Tell us about yourself and how you took interest in crystals?

I am 40 years old and got into crystals about two and a half years ago. I always thought they were beautiful but never knew much about them. My friend and I like to go to Barnes and Noble and get a coffee and relax and read a bit. So, one day, I decided to pick up a crystal book and my fascination with them began. I never knew there were so many different crystals! Each crystal is unique, have their own meaning, and are created by Earth all over the world. My friend and I then made plans to go to a “gem show” and that was what started me to begin collecting them and educating myself on their meanings.

2. What do you mean “their meanings?”

Each crystal has a meaning. For example, rose quartz. Rose quartz is believed to increase one’s self-esteem and self-worth. It also is to help with love. Then you have amethyst, that is a crystal that is believed to help you relax and be less stressed. It’s interesting how they have come to be believed to help someone’s emotions and feelings. If you are not interested in their meanings, they are just beautiful and unique and make great decor.

3. Why are crystals important?

I think they are important for those that believe in their healing qualities. They are used for meditating as well. I personally think they are important to see how mother nature creates such beauty.

4. What are the benefits of crystal jewelry?

The benefits to crystal jewelry are that you can wear a certain crystal for its healing benefits. For example, if you are feeling like you need a self-esteem boost, rose quartz bracelet, ring, or necklace is a great piece to wear. You can easily match them to your mood and how you are feeling. Also, they are absolutely beautiful to turn into jewelry and show them off.

5. There are so many types of crystals! How do you choose what crystals to use for jewelry making?

Right now, I like to stick to the popular crystals (rose quartz, amethyst, different forms of agate). I would like to see what people are looking for when making future bracelets.

6. Where are places you can buy crystals?

All over actually. You can search for local sellers, attend gem shows, or go online and find a wholesaler. The key is to watch and make sure the place you are buying or ordering from is legit and they have real crystals. I like to find wholesalers from China. They have amazing carvings and beads.

7. What educational platforms do you use to learn about crystals?

You can easily find information about a certain crystal online. But I found the books to be more in depth and educational on the crystals. If you are looking for a quick reference, I would suggest searching online. But if you want to know where that specific crystal came from, it’s meanings/properties, and how to use what crystal for meditation, I suggest finding a book about crystals.
